The Broken Bow City Council convened for extended sessions on September 8, focusing primarily on finalizing the 2026-2027 city budget. Financial services firm RJ Meyer & Associates, represented by Bob Meyer, presented the budget figures, highlighting a fiscally conservative approach by the city.

Following the budget's approval, the Council unanimously passed Ordinance 1317, which imposes stringent limits on data center development within Broken Bow. These new rules mandate noise studies and limits, water use restrictions, and power demand caps, among other requirements for new data center construction. City Administrator Dave Schmidt also provided updates on various city projects, including the replacement of the power plant, for which two bids have been received, and ongoing capital construction projects. Funding options for the power plant project, including a bond and support from the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska (MEAN), are under discussion.

Additionally, the Council initiated a public discussion regarding potential rules for livestock within city limits, prompted by nuisance concerns. City Attorney Jason White outlined a proposed ordinance that would prohibit most livestock in Broken Bow, with exceptions for existing processing facilities, 4-H/FFA projects, and small flocks of chickens or ducks. Mayor Rod Sonnichsen commended the council and city staff for their work on the budget as the meeting adjourned.
