Glendale considers data center annexation
The Glendale City Council is considering annexing 160 acres for Project Eagle, which would include three data centers totaling 1.1 million square feet and an on-site gas generation plant. Residents raised concerns about neighborhood protections, while the council postponed a final decision, with annexation and rezoning expected to return for consideration on Oct. 27.
Glendale officials are considering annexing a 160-acre site near Litchfield Road and Olive Avenue for Project Eagle, a planned campus with three data centers, an on-site gas generation plant and a future Arizona Public Service substation. The property is about a mile north of Luke Air Force Base and would need to be rezoned to Planned Area Development after annexation.
Public comments reflected differing views. Supporters cited the project’s prior approvals and economic development benefits, while nearby residents questioned whether proposed setbacks, walls and landscaping would adequately protect neighborhoods from the large industrial campus. Mayor Jerry Weiers and council members, including Leandro Baldenegro, Ray Malnar and Lupe Conchas, questioned the project attorney about screening, nearby residential land, military compatibility and the proposed power-generation configuration. The council made no final decision, and the annexation and rezoning are expected to return for further consideration on Oct. 27.
