Cass County commissioners pause new data centers for year amid neighbor concerns

Cass County commissioners in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, voted to implement a 12-month moratorium on new data center developments after a packed public meeting. Residents, including Lisa Hild, expressed significant concerns about the potential impact on their quality of life, environmental factors such as water and electricity usage, and the loss of farmland. Hild, whose family farm is near a site optioned by Tenaska for a data center, stated that even a high financial offer would not compensate for the drastic changes.

Jayden Speed, who founded the coalition Cass County Data Center Watch, highlighted widespread worries about resource consumption. While some, like local business owner Eric Klein and resident Mike Dale, acknowledged the economic benefits of data centers, including tax revenue and community donations, and warned against the county being "left behind," the majority of the public sentiment at the meeting was in favor of slowing down development.

Speed described the year-long pause as "positive" but emphasized the need for further community discussions to iron out specific details. Hild reiterated that while progress and technology are valued, rural Cass County might not be the suitable location for data centers at this time. In addition to the moratorium, the commissioners also decided to postpone a resolution aimed at regulating data centers, indicating a broader pause on related legislative actions.
