However, the expansion of data centers also presents challenges and concerns. The facilities' substantial energy demands raise questions about utility rates and pressure on power grids, with one analysis noting a 267% increase in monthly electricity bills near data centers in Virginia between 2019 and 2025. AWS plans to use wastewater for cooling, but data centers still contribute to carbon dioxide emissions and significant water consumption. Abre’ Conner, director of the NAACP’s Center for Environmental and Climate Justice, expressed concerns that data centers often negatively impact disadvantaged communities, emphasizing the need for companies to address broader environmental issues beyond localized investments.
