Chesterfield weighs sites for new Midlothian Middle School amid data center concerns

Chesterfield County school leaders are evaluating options to replace the 102-year-old Midlothian Middle School and alleviate overcrowding. Two potential sites are under consideration: one on Old 100 Road and another on Otterdale Road.
Chesterfield Board Supervisor Mark Miller, representing the Midlothian district, favors the Otterdale Road location, citing its proximity to the existing middle school and potential for a future elementary school. However, this site is less than a mile from a planned Google data center campus, expected to be operational by 2037.
The proposed proximity to the data center has generated significant opposition from parents and community members, who consider it a "nonstarter." Supervisor Miller acknowledged these concerns, noting that the Virginia Department of Health currently lacks scientific studies to recommend specific distances between schools and data centers. He added that if future studies suggest otherwise, the county could reconsider the data center's suitability for the area. The board is expected to continue discussions on the matter.
