GridCARE CEO Amit Narayan says better use of existing power-grid capacity could help supply electricity to AI data centers without requiring major new infrastructure or raising ratepayer costs. He also discusses public opposition and temporary data center moratoriums linked to concerns about electricity demand and affordability in the Bay Area.

Amit Narayan, co-founder and CEO of energy-efficiency startup GridCARE, said the United States can support rapidly expanding AI and data center demand by using existing electricity infrastructure more efficiently. He estimated that better forecasting and grid management could add 100 to 200 gigawatts of reliable capacity, potentially avoiding years of new construction, permitting and investment.

Narayan said data center power demands have fueled public concern over higher utility bills, protests and temporary moratoriums in some communities, including the Bay Area. He argued that improving utilization of already-paid-for grid assets could lower costs by spreading existing expenses across more electricity usage, rather than requiring ratepayers to fund new infrastructure.
