Residents, developers and local officials met at a final community forum to discuss a potential data center near Burkhalter Road in Statesboro, including noise, lighting, growth and public input. The site has been rezoned, but construction is not approved; a special use permit and an identified end user would still be required.

Residents, developers and Statesboro officials held the final in a series of community forums about a potential data center near Burkhalter Road. Residents raised concerns about generator noise, lighting, industrial development near homes and whether their views would affect the approval process.

Developer Bobby Bagwell said the project would use transmission-line power with generators for emergency backup and would rely on acoustic engineering, landscaping and sound suppression to meet city requirements. Mayor Jonathan McCollar defended Statesboro's data center ordinance and cited potential annual revenue of $2.5 million to $4 million, while emphasizing that the site's rezoning did not authorize construction. A special use permit would still be needed, and no application naming an end user had been submitted.

Georgia Southern University's Institute for Vibrant and Engaged Communities will compile forum discussions and questionnaires into a report for local officials and the public. Participants considered excluding data centers, allowing them under current rules or adopting stricter conditions, leaving the final decisions to city and county governments.
