Residents protest Meta data center project in El Paso
Residents in Northeast El Paso held a "Block Party Protest" against a proposed Meta data center project. Organized by the Sembrando Esperanza Coalition, opponents expressed concerns about the facility's high water and electricity consumption, and its proximity to homes. They also voiced distrust that data centers fulfill their promises to the community.
Community groups and residents living near the Meta data center project in Northeast El Paso organized a "Block Party Protest" to voice their opposition. Veronica Carbajal, representing the Sembrando Esperanza Coalition, stated the gathering aimed to connect opponents and demonstrate to Meta that the community does not want them in the area.
Carbajal highlighted significant concerns regarding the data center's environmental impact, particularly its projected water consumption of up to 2.5 million gallons per day on the hottest days. She also noted that El Paso Electric has not provided clear answers regarding the water needed for the power plant to supply a thousand megawatts to the facility, despite a promised response by June 18th.
Furthermore, Carbajal shared insights from experiences with other data centers across the state and country, suggesting that such facilities often fail to uphold their commitments to local communities.
