Virginia Sierra Club discusses data center environmental impact at SML Democrats meeting
During a monthly meeting of the SML Democrats, the Virginia Sierra Club's communications director discussed the significant environmental impact of data centers. The presentation highlighted their substantial water and electricity consumption, harmful diesel generator emissions, and negative effects on property values due to noise and close proximity to residential areas in Virginia.
Tim Cywinski, communications director for the Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club, addressed the SML Democrats during their July 27 meeting, detailing the environmental impact of data centers. The Sierra Club, a prominent grassroots environmental organization, actively lobbies for new utility policies to safeguard local communities across various states.
Virginia currently leads the nation with 398 operational data centers, primarily concentrated in Northern Virginia, according to the Pew Research Center. Cywinski highlighted that data centers are major consumers of water for cooling and draw significant energy from local grids. Their reliance on diesel generators as a backup power source is a concern, as these generators can release up to 13,000 tons of toxic particulates, including nitrogen oxides, into the atmosphere.
Furthermore, Cywinski noted the close proximity of many data centers to residential areas in Virginia; 50% are located within 200 feet of homes, and 70% are within 500 feet. This proximity, coupled with noise pollution from the facilities, has reportedly contributed to a decrease in local property values.
