Morristown looks to set data center rules to govern any future proposals
Morristown city leaders are considering zoning standards for potential future data centers. The proposed rules would limit facilities to heavy industrial areas, require 500-foot setbacks from homes, schools and occupied government buildings, address noise from equipment, and require confirmation of adequate power and water capacity.
The Morristown City Council is considering new zoning standards to prepare for possible future data center proposals. The measure would not approve a new facility or select a site, but would establish where data centers could operate and what requirements they would need to meet.
The proposal would limit future facilities to heavy industrial districts and require at least 500 feet of separation from residential properties, schools and occupied government buildings. It would also address noise by requiring associated equipment to be enclosed, while the Morristown Utility Commission would assess whether sufficient electricity and water capacity exists. Residents may comment as the measure proceeds through its first reading.
