The forthcoming $14.5 billion Project Marvel data center has emerged as a critical issue in Bessemer's mayoral runoff election, prompting significant community concern over its environmental and transparency implications. Residents have voiced their opposition, leading to protests and community meetings.
Mayoral candidate Louise Alexander recently hosted a meeting to address residents' concerns, while candidate Darral Bethel participated in a protest against the data center. Incumbent Keith Gulley and candidate Brenita Lewis are also in the race, though they did not comment. Heidi Colpo of Humans United of Bessemer criticized the lack of research into the project's long-term effects and the city council's perceived unresponsiveness.
Colpo, who supports Darral Bethel, emphasized the election's importance for preventing what she described as an "overreach into other people’s lives." A political forum on August 9 will provide an opportunity for candidates to discuss Project Marvel directly with the community before the August 25 election.
