The Lowndes County Commission's regular second-Monday meeting, scheduled for May 11, was cancelled by Commission Chairman Charlie King Jr. due to an upcoming election primary. Despite the cancellation, more than 20 citizens arrived at the Charles Smith Annex Building, hoping the meeting would proceed.
Commission Vice Chairman Dickson Farrior and Commissioner Joseph Barganier were present to conduct necessary county business, particularly bill payments, but a quorum was not met. Citizens used the informal gathering to voice their strong opposition to a potential data center proposed for a site in Burkville. Commissioner Farrior stated that he had not received any calls in support of the data center from his district and expressed concerns from constituents, including one who feared the project would lower his property value and make his home unsellable.
The commissioners encouraged residents to attend the next scheduled meeting, currently set for Monday, May 25, though it may be rescheduled to May 26 due to the Memorial Day holiday.
