Data center developers share plans at San Jose town hall
Prologis and Menlo Digital presented plans for two South San Jose data centers at a community town hall and agreed to conduct environmental reviews under the city’s forthcoming data center standards. Residents raised concerns about air pollution, power costs, water quality, water use, noise and other neighborhood impacts.
Prologis and Menlo Digital representatives told South San Jose residents that their proposed data centers will comply with new standards being developed by the City of San Jose. Menlo Digital is planning a 444,400-square-foot facility on Charlotte Drive, while Prologis is proposing a 516,000-square-foot project at 5977 Silver Creek Valley Road; each would use 99 megawatts of power and include substations and backup generators.
Residents and environmental advocates questioned the projects’ effects on air quality, groundwater, water use, wildlife, noise and household electricity costs. Menlo Digital said its facility would use an air-cooled closed-loop cooling system, while Prologis said it would follow city requirements for equipment safety and water-quality monitoring. The city expects to finalize its standards by the end of the year, following state legislation signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom requiring environmental reviews and water-use disclosures for new data centers.
