Environmental justice groups, led by the Center for Biological Diversity, have petitioned the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to update outdated regulations concerning diesel generators used by data centers. They argue that current 20-year-old rules are insufficient to protect public health given the rapid growth of data centers in the region. The District has confirmed receipt of the petition and is currently reviewing the requests.

Gov: Bay Area Air Quality Management District
Environmental justice organizations are urging California's air quality regulators to impose stricter controls on the diesel generators used by data centers. A coalition of nearly 20 groups, spearheaded by the Center for Biological Diversity, submitted a petition to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District on Wednesday, contending that the current two-decade-old regulations are inadequate to safeguard public health amidst the burgeoning data center industry.
Meya Saenz Zagar, a campaigner for the Center for Biological Diversity, highlighted the significant increase in the "scale and number of diesel generators" without corresponding updates to regulations. Miranda Iglesias, a media manager for the Bay Area Air Quality District, confirmed that the district has received the petition and is in the process of reviewing the coalition's requests.
