Plymouth MA Approves Yearlong Data Center Moratorium
Plymouth residents voted 149-0, with one abstention, to impose a one-year moratorium on new data center development. The pause, running through Oct. 16, 2027, allows town officials to study electricity capacity, water demand, noise and infrastructure impacts before deciding whether to adopt permanent regulations or extend the moratorium.
Plymouth Town Meeting approved a one-year freeze on new data center applications, permits, construction, expansions and conversions. The moratorium took effect Oct. 17 after a 149-0 vote with one abstention, despite the town having no active data center applications at the time.
During the pause, the Plymouth Planning Board and town staff will work with Eversource and the municipal water department to assess potential effects on the electric grid, water supplies, noise and local infrastructure. Before the moratorium expires, officials may allow it to lapse, adopt permanent data center regulations or extend the freeze.
