Form Energy, an energy storage developer based in Weirton, West Virginia, has secured a significant multi-year commercial agreement with Crusoe Energy Systems, a clean computing infrastructure developer. The partnership involves Form Energy supplying its proprietary iron-air battery systems to power AI data center grids, with an unprecedented capacity of 12 gigawatt-hours of electricity. Commercial production and initial shipments from the Weirton assembly plant are slated to begin in early 2027.

Form Energy CEO Mateo Jaramillo highlighted the uniqueness of their iron-air battery technology, designed for long-duration grid stabilization, distinguishing it from lithium-ion alternatives. Weirton City Manager Mike Adams noted the profound economic shift for the historic steel town, transitioning into a cutting-edge battery manufacturing hub and creating high-paying jobs. This industrial evolution supports Governor Patrick Morrisey's statewide initiative to make West Virginia a premier energy capital, with a target of generating 50 gigawatts of energy by 2050.

While the rapid expansion of computing infrastructure raises national debates about environmental impact, including high water and electricity consumption by AI data centers, West Virginia lawmakers like Delegate Mark Zatezalo have downplayed these concerns. They assert that the battery facility's environmental footprint is minimal compared to the historical pollution from the town's former steel plants. Form Energy executives also mentioned collaborations with hyperscalers like Google and Microsoft to mitigate utility rate increases and water depletion. The state anticipates further economic announcements, with nine major AI data centers currently in various stages of development, including one in Monongalia County.
