North Tonawanda looking to extend cryptomining moratorium for another year
The North Tonawanda City Council plans to extend its moratorium on new cryptocurrency operations and data centers for another year. The extended moratorium will include a hardship clause to provide the city with more oversight over potential changes to the existing Digipower X facility, allowing noise level testing to ensure compliance with new ordinances.
The North Tonawanda City Council is planning to extend its moratorium on new cryptocurrency operations and data centers for an additional 12 months. This proposed extension comes with new stipulations, specifically a hardship clause designed to enhance city oversight over potential modifications to the Digipower X facility located on Erie Avenue.
The hardship clause would enable the city to conduct noise level tests on any new systems proposed by Digipower X. Should these changes lead to noise levels exceeding the city's recently established noise ordinance, the city would have the authority to disallow them. This move aims to give the City of North Tonawanda greater control over the environmental impact of such facilities.
