San Jose Data Center Developers Outline Plans at Community Town Hall
Prologis and Menlo Digital presented plans for two large data centers in South San Jose and said they would conduct additional environmental reviews and comply with new city standards. Residents raised concerns about air pollution, water quality and use, noise, wildlife, power costs and the effects of diesel generators.
Representatives of Prologis and Menlo Digital outlined two proposed South San Jose data centers at a community town hall organized by the District 2 Neighborhood Leadership Council. Menlo Digital is planning a 444,400-square-foot facility on Charlotte Drive, while Prologis is proposing a 516,000-square-foot project on Silver Creek Valley Road. Each facility would require about 99 megawatts of power and include substations and backup generators.
Menlo Digital Senior Vice President Allison Koo and Prologis Vice President Courtney Bell said their companies would comply with San Jose's forthcoming data center standards and conduct additional environmental reviews. Residents and environmental advocates questioned the projects' potential effects on air pollution, groundwater, water use, heat, noise and wildlife, as well as whether infrastructure costs could affect utility customers. San Jose is developing uniform standards, while state legislation signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom requires environmental reviews and water-use disclosures for new data centers.
