The city of Hermantown, Minnesota is divided over a proposed hyperscale data center project by Google. Opponents in the grassroots group 'Stop the Hermantown Data Center' raised concerns about the residential location, while supporters from local trade unions argued it would bring economic benefits. The city council was set to vote on an environmental review for the project, which opponents say is insufficient and are calling for a full Environmental Impact Statement.

Gov: Hermantown City Council
The city of Hermantown, Minnesota held its first city council meeting since the public learned that Google is the company behind a proposed hyperscale data center project in the city.
There was extensive public comment ahead of a council vote on approving an Alternative Urban Areawide Review, which is usually performed for light industrial development.
Members of the grassroots group 'Stop the Hermantown Data Center' wore red and voiced concerns about the residential location of the project, arguing that a full Environmental Impact Statement is needed. On the other hand, trade union members under 'YesMN' wore green to show support, saying the project would provide families with steady incomes.
Neither side's opinion on the project seemed changed by the fact that Google is the company behind it. Opponents say they are determined to fight the project, while supporters argue it can bring more money and technology to the Duluth area.
