Wisconsin Rapids Planning Commission recommends denying data center permit application

The Wisconsin Rapids Planning Commission recently voted 7-0 to recommend the denial of a conditional use permit application for a proposed data center at the former Rapids mill site. The decision followed a city staff recommendation to deny the permit due to an incomplete and late application, as well as extensive public comment. While some, including union representatives, advocated for the data center provided it complied with city ordinances, a majority of attendees, including State Assemblyman Scott Krug (R-Rome), spoke against the development, highlighting cross-party opposition. Mayor Matt Zacher praised community engagement in the local government process.

Despite this setback, PNK Group, the applicant, stated that the meeting did not change their commitment to the Wisconsin Rapids project, noting that the city ordinance allows for re-submission of the application. Local opposition groups, such as the South Wood County Neighbors for Responsible Development (SWCNRD), expressed satisfaction with the planning commission's recommendation but emphasized that their work is not yet complete. Co-founder Kaitlyn Federwitz underscored her commitment to protecting her home community's beauty and growth. The ultimate decision now rests with the city's common council, which will review the planning commission's recommendation. Adding another layer of complexity, a public hearing for a city-wide moratorium on data center development is scheduled for October 5, which, if passed, could significantly affect the project's future before PNK Group can re-submit its application.
