The Jackson County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) in Florida has voted in favor of a one-year temporary moratorium on the construction of AI data centers, following significant community opposition.

Hundreds of residents gathered outside the BOCC office to voice their concerns, despite the item not being on the official agenda. Commissioners acknowledged the public's presence and made it clear they were against data center development. Payton Gate of News 13 reported on the meeting, where the BOCC's unanimous vote for the moratorium was intended to provide time to study the program and develop a workable plan in accordance with Florida Statute 65.

Following the vote, the board opened the floor for public comment, where residents, including those from surrounding Bay and Washington counties, shared their thoughts for over an hour. Many expressed a desire to protect Jackson County's natural environment, fearing the proposed project's scale and lack of benefits. One resident, whose home was near the proposed 1200-acre site, voiced strong distaste for the project's potential impacts.

Before the moratorium officially becomes an ordinance, it is scheduled for two separate public hearings and a subsequent vote for final approval.
