Residents of Newport Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, convened at West Side Park on Sunday to deliberate on a significant data center development proposed for their community. The gathering was organized by local residents to inform the public about the project's scale and its potential implications, following the issuance of zoning permits by municipal officials in early August.
The permits allow for the construction of 15 closed-loop data centers and three gas generation facilities. Laura Riechers, a Newport Township resident, underscored the importance of community input on such substantial municipal decisions. Nate Eachus, from neighboring Butler Township, also attended, emphasizing the need for widespread awareness across regional communities regarding the development.
While zoning permits have been issued, the proposed project must successfully navigate the township’s official land-development process before any construction can commence.
