Nebius AI data center construction draws neighbor concerns
Construction has commenced on a Nebius AI data center in Birmingham's Oxmoor Valley, sparking concerns among local residents regarding noise, water usage, and potential impacts on electricity. Neighbors have filed a lawsuit to halt the project; however, a judge has allowed construction to proceed while a hearing is scheduled to determine the lawsuit's future.
Construction has begun on a new Nebius AI factory data center in Birmingham, Alabama's Oxmoor Valley neighborhood, prompting significant concerns from residents living near the 80-acre site. Neighbors, including Zackary Pace, are worried about construction noise, the facility's water consumption, and its eventual impact on local electricity services, despite Nebius's assurances that the facility will incorporate noise-reduction technology, use minimal water, and not affect electric bills.
In response to these concerns, two neighbors have initiated legal action by filing a lawsuit aimed at stopping the data center project. Although a judge has permitted construction to continue temporarily, a hearing is scheduled for Friday to decide if the lawsuit will proceed.
To mitigate immediate concerns, the construction company has agreed to restrict certain activities to standard business hours. This ongoing development highlights a common conflict between data center expansion and local community apprehension over environmental and infrastructure strain.
