Birmingham's Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) has voted to recommend Nebius' request to construct a substation for its planned 300-megawatt "AI factory" along Lakeshore Parkway to the full Birmingham City Council. This recommendation was made despite significant community opposition voiced during a public hearing at Birmingham City Hall.
Oxmoor Valley residents raised concerns about potential impacts on power, water, noise, and other environmental issues. The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) also expressed opposition, stating the project would negatively affect their future animal hospital in the area. Ivana Sullivan, GBHS' Chief Program Officer, highlighted the potential for continuous disruptions to animal health and recovery.
Nebius spokesperson John Sutter assured the community of the company's commitment to transparency and operating responsibly, aiming to build a facility the community can be proud of. However, neighbors continue to seek more answers about the project. In a related action, the ZBA denied Alabama Power's request to build a switching station intended to connect the data center to the existing transmission network, leaving the implications for the overall project unclear.
