City Council Schedules Public Hearing on Proposed Data Center Moratorium

The Greensboro City Council is set to hold a public hearing on Monday, August 17, to discuss and consider a proposed 120-day moratorium on new data centers with an electrical power demand exceeding 10 megawatts. The hearing will take place at 4 pm in the Katie Dorsett Council Chamber.
Mayor Marikay Abuzuaiter stated that the moratorium is a response to community questions about data centers and will allow the Council to gather facts, hear public comments, and make informed decisions. She emphasized the city's commitment to thoughtful and strategic growth.
If adopted, the moratorium would temporarily halt the acceptance, processing, and approval of development applications for such facilities. This pause would enable the City to study potential impacts on infrastructure, utilities, the electrical grid, the environment, and land use. The Council plans to engage with subject matter experts and review best practices, with the gathered information intended to inform potential amendments to Greensboro's Land Development Ordinance.
