Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said the developers of a planned data center complex in Dickerson, Maryland "have a right to go forward" in the county's planning process, despite arguments from the data center company's attorneys against a potential moratorium on data center development in the county. The county is considering regulations for data centers, and the prospect of a moratorium on new data centers did not sit well with the California-based company Atmosphere Data Centers, which is planning a 300 MW data center on a former coal plant site in Dickerson.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said the developers of a planned data center complex in Dickerson "have a right to go forward" with the project. Attorneys for the California-based Atmosphere Data Centers argued against a potential moratorium, stating it could "significantly delay, and quite possibly derail the project." Elrich indicated he may consider bypassing the County Council to temporarily prevent new data center applications, similar to an action taken in Frederick County. Meanwhile, the Council is considering measures to study the risks and benefits of data centers, and restrict where they can be built in the county.
