Nockamixon Township is moving to regulate data centers within its borders, driven by local residents' concerns regarding potential increases in electricity costs and the risk of power grid disruptions. Last week, the Nockamixon Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to authorize the advertisement of an ordinance that would significantly amend the township's zoning code. This ordinance aims to establish stringent requirements for data center operations. The proposed regulations include restrictions on excessive noise, smoke, dust, and heat emissions extending beyond a data center's property lines. Specifically, centers would be required to keep heat emissions below 20% when temperatures drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Furthermore, applicants for data center projects must provide verification of adequate electrical grid capacity and an independent energy assessment detailing potential rate impact scenarios. A crucial provision mandates a process for detecting and mitigating any increases in residents' electricity bills, holding centers accountable for covering such increases for a period of 10 years. Supervisor Chairman Bill Sadow emphasized the necessity of addressing these concerns.
