Judge to rule on injunction on proposed Westlake data center
A judge is set to rule on an injunction pausing a vote on a proposed 1.1 million square foot data center in Westlake, Texas. Residents of nearby Keller are opposing the project due to concerns about noise, power, water, and property values. The upcoming court hearing will determine if Westlake can proceed with voting on the development agreement.
A controversial data center project in Westlake, North Texas, is currently facing a legal challenge. A Tarrant County judge previously issued a temporary restraining order last week, forcing Westlake officials to postpone a vote on the development agreement for the proposed facility. Later this morning, both sides will present arguments in court to determine whether this pause should remain in effect.
The planned 1.1 million square foot data center, situated along Highway 377, has become the subject of intense debate due to its proximity to the neighboring city of Keller. While the data center would be over 3,000 feet from homes within Westlake, it would be as close as 500 feet to residences across the city line in Keller. Keller residents have consistently voiced concerns at public meetings regarding potential impacts on noise, power, water resources, and property values.
Janelle Ford, reporting live from the Tarrant County Courthouse, highlighted the geographical drama at the heart of the dispute. A Keller's Homeowners Association was instrumental in securing the temporary restraining order. While one Westlake resident expressed sympathy for Keller residents, they also wished for more responsibility in some of Keller's prior rezoning decisions. A City of Keller representative affirmed the city's commitment to exploring all legal avenues in the best interest of its residents.
The hearing is scheduled for 10 o'clock. If the judge upholds the injunction, Westlake will be unable to vote on the development agreement. However, Westlake officials have stated their intention to bring the agreement back before its council if the injunction is lifted.
