Gov: Grimes County Judge Joe Fauth, Grimes County Commissioners Court, Grimes County
Grimes County Judge Joe Fauth has stated that no formal data center proposals are currently before the commissioners court, despite circulating rumors among residents. Fauth clarified that for any company to receive a tax abatement, such as a 3D1, an official application would need to be submitted to the county, a step that has not yet occurred. He emphasized that without such a filing, any discussions remain speculative.
Local residents, including Karen Shiver, have expressed significant concerns about the potential effects of data centers on their land, water, and health. Shiver highlighted the nascent health research on these facilities and voiced particular apprehension about their long-term implications, especially regarding water consumption and impacts on wildlife.
Judge Fauth acknowledged the county's limited regulatory power over private land sales. He explained that if a private landowner opts to sell their property for data center development, the existing county restrictions on landowners are minimal, granting the developer the right to proceed. Fauth concluded that while no proposals are currently on file, there is no guarantee against future submissions, which would first appear before the commissioners court.
