Yadkinville data center projects not affected by county moratorium
Yadkin County commissioners have enacted a two-year moratorium on new data center development within the county's unincorporated areas. However, two planned data center projects in Yadkinville by WhiteFiber and its subsidiary Enovum Data Centers are not affected by this pause as they fall within the town's limits. The company plans to acquire and retrofit existing warehouses for these facilities.
Yadkin County commissioners recently approved a two-year moratorium on new data center construction within the unincorporated areas of the county. This decision, made last Monday, aims to pause development that falls under the county's direct zoning authority.
Despite the county-wide pause, two data center projects planned for Yadkinville are set to move forward. County Manager Michael Silverman clarified that the moratorium does not extend to sites located within the town's limits, as these areas fall under Yadkinville's own zoning regulations.
AI infrastructure company WhiteFiber, through its subsidiary Enovum Data Centers, announced plans to acquire and retrofit warehouse spaces in Yadkinville for data center use on the same day the county's moratorium was approved. Jon Collins of Enovum Data Centers stated that the company's strategy involves converting existing facilities to avoid impacting undeveloped land and to repurpose abandoned structures. The Yadkinville project will reportedly be modeled after WhiteFiber's Madison facility, which is hosting a town hall meeting for Rockingham County residents.
