The rapid construction of data centers across the United States, including a potential facility in Dubuque, Iowa, is raising substantial concerns among local residents. These concerns primarily revolve around the significant electricity usage of these facilities and their broader environmental impact on land and water resources. The AI boom is driving this expansion, leading to increased strain on electric grids and rising electricity costs for communities, while profits are largely retained by the data center operators.

In response to these challenges, a coalition of 186 scientists from 31 colleges and universities across Iowa held a virtual summit. They subsequently issued an "Iowa Climate Statement," advocating for state lawmakers to enact legislation that facilitates the state's adaptation to these changes by promoting renewable energy solutions. The scientists noted that Iowa currently hosts 91 data centers, with an additional 42 either planned or under construction, placing the state 14th nationally in data center quantity.

Highlighting the state's energy mix, the scientists pointed out that in 2025, coal power plants supplied 27% of MidAmerican Energy's and 20% of Alliant Energy's electricity in Iowa. While renewable energy now accounts for 69% of MidAmerican Energy's generation and 38% of Alliant Energy's, the scientists argue that the increased energy demand from data centers necessitates new generation capacity. They urge utility companies to prioritize building renewable energy plants over fossil fuel-based alternatives, citing the environmental benefits of reduced greenhouse gas emissions and protection against volatile fuel prices. This approach, they contend, is crucial for maintaining environmental integrity and preventing data centers from disproportionately consuming community resources.
