Lebanon, Jeffersonville expected to receive part of $1B Meta campaign

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced a $1 billion "Future Is For Everyone Fund" to support communities hosting its data centers. This fund is part of a broader commitment detailing the economic benefits Meta's AI data centers bring, including increased tax revenue and community investments.

Lebanon and Jeffersonville, Indiana, are among the communities expected to benefit from this fund. In Lebanon, Meta is constructing a 1,500-acre data center campus and has already committed $1 million annually for 20 years to the Boone County Community Trust for energy assistance, along with significant investments in public water, wastewater, and road infrastructure. Jeffersonville is on track to open a 617-acre data center, an $800 million investment, and Meta has already contributed to local nonprofits for educational and workforce training initiatives.

Despite these community investments, both cities have faced "fierce pushback from local residents" concerning the impacts of ongoing construction, including loud noises, light pollution, and heavy traffic. This opposition has led to significant government action in the region. The Jeffersonville City Council recently passed a one-year moratorium on new data center development, intending to allow time for new planning and zoning rules. Similarly, the Clark County plan commission voted for a one-year moratorium in unincorporated areas, pending approval from county commissioners. Boone County commissioners also approved a one-year moratorium to evaluate data center impacts and consider updates to zoning regulations.
