Jefferson County Commissioners State Inability to Impose Countywide Data Center Moratorium
Jefferson County commissioners announced they lack the legal authority to implement a countywide moratorium on data centers. They advised local municipalities to develop their own land-use regulations instead. The county is also developing a Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance, expected later this year.
Jefferson County, Pennsylvania commissioners have announced they do not possess the legal authority to implement a countywide moratorium on data center development. This statement comes as municipalities across the county are grappling with the potential impacts of data center growth.
The commissioners have instead urged individual municipalities within Jefferson County to establish their own land-use regulations to manage data center projects. Concurrently, the county is progressing on a new Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance, anticipated to be finalized later this year. This ordinance could provide a framework for future development, including aspects relevant to data center siting.
The announcement also noted the approval of a nearly $200,000 project to upgrade the Jefferson County Jail’s video surveillance system, funded by a Local Share Account. This detail, however, is separate from the primary discussion regarding data center regulation.
