Columbus City Council has delayed a vote on a proposed Technology Overlay District, necessary for a $5 billion data center project dubbed "Project Ruby," after residents raised concerns about water and electricity usage and environmental impact. The council extended the review period by 45 days to address these issues and create a protective framework for citizens and investors. A final vote is expected later this summer.

The Columbus City Council in Georgia has postponed a crucial vote on a Technology Overlay District, a prerequisite for the progression of "Project Ruby," a proposed $5 billion data center. The decision to delay by 45 days follows significant community feedback and concerns regarding the project's potential environmental impact, including excessive water and electricity consumption, and its contribution to heat islands.
Residents, such as Sophia Rother and Pamela Mulvaney, expressed strong opposition, advocating for the zoning overlay to be put to a public vote and highlighting environmental issues. District 9 Councilman John Anker stated the delay is necessary to establish a robust zoning framework that safeguards citizens while also attracting investors. The council aims to ensure the district's regulations prevent nuisances like noise and heat, with a final vote on the overlay district anticipated this summer.
"Project Ruby" was initially announced in February as a plan to bring a substantial data center to Muscogee County within the designated Technology Overlay District.
