A Metropolitan Development Commission hearing examiner, Judy Weerts Hall, has recommended approval for DC BLOX's petition for a variance of use, allowing the company to move forward with plans for a three-building data center campus in east Indianapolis. The proposed site, a former Ford plant off South Kitley Avenue and Fintail Drive, borders the Irvington neighborhood and the Pennsy Trail. The project is estimated to cost $2.2 billion and cover 420,000 square feet.

The recommendation was met with vocal opposition from residents at the hearing, who expressed concerns about environmental impacts, potential loss in property value, and the data center's proximity to an elementary school. Jack Killen, a local resident, articulated these fears, stating he doesn't want his daughter to grow up in such an environment. Some city councilors, including Councilor Nielsen who represents the bordering area, also oppose the project based on constituent feedback.

Following the examiner's announcement, the room reportedly "erupted in shouting and chanting," with some attendees asked to leave. The recommendation will now proceed to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission for a final vote scheduled for next month.
