County sells land near Archer Complex for crypto or data center development
Laramie County in Wyoming sold 64.85 acres of land near the Archer Complex to Cryptonite LLC. The company intends to develop either a crypto mining operation or a data center on the purchased property. The county retains some control over future development through mineral rights, a buyback option, and a permitting process for any changes to land use.
The Laramie County Board of Commissioners approved the sale of 64.85 acres of land, located east of Cheyenne and adjacent to the Archer Complex, to Cryptonite LLC. An addendum to the purchase offer indicates that Cryptonite LLC plans to develop the property into either a crypto mining operation, a data center, or a combination of both.
Commission Chair Gunnar Malm explained that the county had previously acquired the land from the same buyer years ago, intending to build a shooting complex. However, only a small portion was used for that purpose, leading to the current buy-back agreement. The county will maintain ownership of the shooting range area and retain mineral rights to the sold parcels, which could provide additional revenue for improvements at the Archer Complex.
While Cryptonite LLC has discretion over the development, Laramie County maintains some oversight. Any future changes in land use would require a permitting process, including applications for modifications to the Planned Unit Development and a conditional use permit. Heavy industrial activities, such as operating a junkyard, are prohibited. Furthermore, the county retains a right of buyback, allowing them to repurchase the land if it is not adequately developed within five years.
