Cass County, Nebraska, is considering new regulations on data center development, joining several other Nebraska counties looking to control or temporarily ban such facilities. Over 100 residents gathered at the Cass County Fairgrounds for a Planning Commission meeting to discuss a potential zoning ordinance.

The proposed ordinance aims to regulate the development, siting, and operational requirements for data center facilities. During the public comment session, at least a dozen people spoke, all expressing opposition to data centers. Concerns raised included potential environmental harm and the negative impact on small town communities, with one resident emphasizing, "The AI data centers are not a democratic or a republican issue."

The Planning Commission ultimately voted to recommend its proposed regulations to the Cass County Board of Commissioners. They also requested the Board conduct a third-party study on how other counties have implemented similar measures. Additionally, the commission asked the Board to place a moratorium on data centers while further regulations are ironed out, though no specific timeframe was given.
