Coachella Considering Permanent Ban On Data Center Developments
The Coachella City Council is set to hold a public hearing to discuss a proposed ordinance that would permanently ban data center developments within the city. The ban is prompted by concerns over potential negative impacts on electrical infrastructure, water resources, air quality, public health, and land use. This ordinance, if approved, would take effect 30 days after council vote and supersede a current temporary moratorium.
The Coachella City Council is scheduled to discuss a proposed ordinance on Wednesday that would permanently prohibit data center developments and uses within the city limits. This measure stems from concerns regarding potential adverse effects on the city's electrical infrastructure, water resources, air quality, public health and safety, and land use compatibility. The ordinance comprehensively defines data centers and related uses, while also outlining exemptions for accessory server rooms and IT facilities incidental to permitted principal uses.
City staff have recommended that the council decide on the ordinance directly, rather than placing it on the November ballot. This approach would allow the council to amend the ordinance as needed, with any changes still requiring review by the planning commission and council, and public input. Coachella currently has a temporary moratorium on data center developments that is set to expire on June 3, 2027. The public hearing will take place at 6 p.m. at 1515 Sixth St.
