The Columbus County Board of Commissioners approved a 120-day pause on data center development amid calls for more information about potential impacts on water supplies, electricity, air quality, infrastructure and natural resources. Supporters said data centers could create jobs, raise wages and generate substantial tax revenue as the county seeks to replace industries lost in recent decades.

Residents and commissioners also urged caution, citing possible effects on water quality and availability, electricity demand, Lake Waccamaw, the Green Swamp and other areas. Assistant County Attorney Misty Jorgensen said no formal data center permits had been filed, while commissioners indicated the moratorium could be lifted earlier if the board determines that sufficient information has been gathered.
