A proposed 69,000-square-foot AI data center adjacent to the Nashville Zoo in Tennessee has ignited strong opposition from zoo officials, local residents, and government representatives. Zoo president and CEO Rick Schwartz expressed vehement opposition, citing concerns that the facility's noise pollution, located just 50 yards from animal enclosures, could prevent endangered Southeast Asian clouded leopards from reproducing. The species is classified as vulnerable and difficult to breed in captivity, being highly sensitive to auditory disturbances.

The project, spearheaded by DC BLOX, has prompted widespread backlash, including a petition garnering over 180,000 signatures. Nashville City Council member Courtney Johnston has publicly stated her intention to push for a vote on a data center moratorium during an upcoming meeting, responding to significant community outcry. Mayor Freddie O'Connell has also voiced concerns and confirmed that the city's legal department is investigating the project.

DC BLOX has responded to the controversy by promising to adhere to federal and local environmental requirements, maintain acceptable noise levels, and utilize closed-loop or waterless cooling designs to minimize water consumption. However, the company faces considerable challenges in gaining public support amidst the growing opposition, which also highlights broader environmental concerns related to data centers' carbon footprint and water demands, a theme playing out in communities nationwide.
