Data center projects to be banned for one year in Town of Tonawanda

The Tonawanda Town Board enacted a one-year moratorium on new data center projects following significant public opposition. The decision comes after residents strongly voiced concerns about a proposed $2 billion AI data center slated for the former Tonawanda Coke remediation site.
The proposed AI data center is intended as the first of a three-phase development for the site, with subsequent phases planned to include office buildings, as well as commercial and residential spaces. Town of Tonawanda Planning Board Chairman Mark Rountree had previously attempted to provide an update on the AI data center project in June but was repeatedly interrupted by residents.
