Spartanburg County Council, speakers clash at data center meeting

Spartanburg County Council convened a special meeting to address data center developments, particularly a proposed one-year moratorium that had previously seen a delayed vote. The multi-hour meeting was marked by intense debate and emotional exchanges between council members, attorneys, developers, and area residents.
The Southern Environmental Law Center, represented by attorney Frank Holleman, advocated for a pause in data center construction, citing concerns about a current project on South Pine Street and its potential environmental impact, comparing it to a "mega power plant." NorthMark Strategies, the company behind the data center, sent external affairs director Sarah Knox, who stated the company is complying with state laws but acknowledged the significant obligations of such large-scale projects. Council Chairman Mo Abusaft expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of scientific representation from NorthMark.
NorthMark also confirmed that it is awaiting an air permit to operate, which it anticipates receiving by the end of the year. A third and final vote on the proposed one-year moratorium is scheduled for September 21.
