Unredacted NDA names Wiscasset’s data center inquirer
A proposed data center project in Wiscasset, Maine, by Boundless Power LLC, is no longer being pursued by the developer. The town decided against moving forward with the project due to concerns over its massive electricity demand, potential strain on the state's power grid, and public opposition, among other financial and infrastructure considerations.
A proposed data center development in Wiscasset, Maine, which promised millions in tax revenue and hundreds of jobs, has been halted. Recently released unredacted documents, including a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) that expired in August, reveal that Boundless Power, LLC, led by Fred Robinson (formerly with BayWa r.e. Americas), was the inquirer behind the project.
The town decided not to proceed with discussions, citing substantial concerns. Economic Development Director Aaron Chrostowsky raised questions about the data center's projected power consumption, estimated at 7,500 GWH/year, which would account for approximately 60% of Maine's annual electricity generation capacity. This raised serious doubts about the state's power grid's ability to support such a demand without significant and costly upgrades, which the developer would be responsible for.
Further concerns included the need for superior fiber-optic infrastructure and the financial implications for the town, such as the potential loss of a $240,000 county grant earmarked for other pre-development work if an exclusivity agreement was signed. Town attorney Todd Griset advised against an exclusive option without a substantial payment from BayWa, citing the project's material risks to Wiscasset's public value.
Fred Robinson confirmed that Boundless Power is no longer pursuing the Old Ferry Road data center project, respecting the town's decision. Chrostowsky indicated that he does not foresee a data center ever being built at the site, partly due to public concerns.
