Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has announced a statewide pause on new data center permits, citing the need to protect the state's electricity grid and water resources. The directive orders the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to cease issuing permits until a comprehensive audit of data centers' electrical and water consumption, as well as their impact on grid reliability and local communities, is completed by ERCOT, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT), and the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB).
Abbott emphasized that "Texans must come first" and that data centers must be self-sufficient in their resource demands. He had previously instructed the TWDB to ensure data centers comply with water-use reporting requirements and face legal repercussions for non-compliance. The Governor's office expects an update from TCEQ by October 19, as data center development continues to be a prominent political issue in the state.
