Developers for the 1,034-acre Project Cardinal data center in Yorkville, Illinois, have requested an 18-month extension to close on the property, citing "unforeseen consequences." The current deadline is July 1, and failure to close by December 31, 2027, would nullify already approved agreements, including the annexation agreement and a $51 million development agreement. The city has also introduced new water usage penalties for Project Cardinal, setting limits of 71,400 gallons per day or an average of 42,000 gallons per day over a billing cycle, despite residents' criticism of the city inviting "water hogs" while advocating for water conservation.
