Edgewater approves ban on AI data centers

Edgewater, Florida's City Council, led by Mayor Diezel DePew, has unanimously approved an immediate and permanent ban on artificial intelligence (AI) data centers within the city limits. The decision, made on Monday, serves as a temporary measure until a November ballot initiative, Charter Amendment 4, can solidify the prohibition by embedding it into the city's charter.
Mayor DePew and Councilmember Eric Rainbird emphasized that the pre-emptive ban is designed to prevent developers from submitting proposals for large-scale AI data centers, safeguarding residents from potential negative impacts. While the current ordinance can be reversed by a future City Council, placing the ban in the city charter would require a voter decision to change it, making it more enduring.
Edgewater joins other Central Florida localities, including Titusville and Flagler County, in taking steps to restrict AI data center development due to long-term impact concerns. Separately, Orange County commissioners are expected to consider a proposed 12-month moratorium on AI data centers at an upcoming meeting. The local actions contrast with President Donald Trump's public support for AI infrastructure, which he has touted as a significant economic engine.
