A new tool could help Iowans understand data centers

The University of Iowa has introduced a new, free resource called the Iowa Data Center Decision Tool, designed to assist local leaders throughout the state in assessing the potential impacts of data center developments. Created by the Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative and the Tippie College of Business’ Social Impact Community, the tool helps communities ask critical questions before making development decisions.
The creators emphasize that the tool is neutral, neither pro nor anti-data center. Instead, it guides communities to consider factors such as water and energy demand, road infrastructure, and how a project integrates with the community's fabric. It also highlights potential economic benefits like job creation and tax revenue. The initiative aims to equip local officials with comprehensive information, ensuring they are well-prepared when negotiating with experienced data center developers, thereby fostering a more equitable discussion.
Since its launch in February, the team has been working to make the tool widely available, noting that communities expressed an immediate need for such a resource. The tool is accessible via the Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative's website, and there is already interest in expanding its capabilities in the future.
