Franklin County meeting could be turning point in data center debate
Franklin County leaders are holding a meeting to address controversial proposed data centers, with the Planning and Zoning Commission expected to vote on rezoning requests for two specific projects: Merrimack Valley Technology Park South and Gateway Digital Campus. The commission will also consider new countywide rules for data centers amidst resident concerns about noise, light, and environmental impacts on the Merrimack River.
The fight over proposed data centers in Franklin County, Missouri, is back in the spotlight, as the Franklin County Planning and Zoning Commission is set to hold a crucial meeting. County leaders are expected to take up the controversial issue, which could be a turning point for data center development in the area.
The commission is slated to discuss plans for two specific data center facilities: the Merrimack Valley Technology Park South, near Pacific, and the Gateway Digital Campus, near Villa Ridge. They are expected to either approve or deny rezoning requests for these two developments. Developers argue these projects would bring significant economic opportunities to Franklin County. However, residents living near the proposed sites have voiced strong opposition, citing concerns about potential noise, bright lights, impacts on wildlife, and environmental damage to the Merrimack River.
In addition to project-specific rezoning, the Planning and Zoning Commission will also vote on new countywide rules for all future data centers. If these countywide rules pass the commission, they would still require final approval from the Franklin County Commission before being enacted. The meeting is scheduled for 7:00 PM tonight at the Union High School gym and is open to the public.
