Charlotte City Council is considering extending the city’s temporary moratorium on new data center projects, which is scheduled to expire Nov. 5. City staff have recommended extending it by 10 to 11 months, potentially through next September, while officials develop water conservation plans, review noise regulations and establish standards for data centers of different sizes.

Council member JD Maswaraarri said state law limits the city’s ability to downzone property, while also warning that a prolonged moratorium could reduce economic opportunities for trade and labor union workers involved in construction. Some Charlotte residents support keeping the pause in place as long as necessary, arguing that the city should address community concerns before allowing new projects to proceed.
