The Houghton City Council recently voted unanimously to enact a one-year moratorium on data center development within the city limits. This decision followed a public comment period where numerous residents and advocacy groups expressed strong support for the measure.

City Manager Eric Waara stated the moratorium is a temporary solution designed to give the city time to review and update its zoning ordinances to responsibly address future data center development. He indicated that the resolution's language was drafted after reviewing similar moratoriums in other Michigan communities.

Councilor Craig Waddell highlighted that this action is part of a growing movement against data centers across the county and the Upper Peninsula, raising concerns about concentrations of wealth, power, and the ability to surveil people. Mayor Pro Tem Buck Foltz praised public engagement and hoped Houghton could set an example for responsible development.

Key supporters included Lexi Tater, Community Organizer for Up North Advocacy Western U.P., and Audrey Gerard, co-founder of the Northern Michigan Alliance for Responsible Development (NMARD). While acknowledging the moratorium as a positive first step, advocates stressed that it is a temporary solution to a long-term problem, urging continued action to implement more permanent zoning regulations.
